Avenida Valbom is one of the most important streets in the center of Cascais, built in 1894, connecting the train station to the town square.
Followed in 1896 by the construction of the Esplanada Príncipe Real D. Luís Filipe and, in 1899, the inauguration of Avenida D. Carlos I, providing access to the Citadel, and gas lighting, which would be succeeded by the telephone in 1900. At this time, the architecture was marked by the summer style, since Cascais was the seaside resort for the capital's wealthy families.
The center of Cascais is now a well-organized area with most of the streets pedestrianized and with direct access to the Ribeira and Rainha beaches, Cascais Bay, Jardim Visconde da Luz, and within walking distance of all the city's facilities and equipment.
Cascais has become a must-see destination for many international celebrities passing through Portugal, establishing itself as a seaside resort, known as the Portuguese Riviera.
"Let me be the silence of your thirst, the stillness of an abandoned field, where all is peace and surrender, and where the world's breath is a slow whisper. Here, where the waves break and always return to the same sand, here, in the deep silence, there is the serenity you sought."
— António Ramos Rosa
